Nail Shapes & How To Pick The One For You

Nail shapes can be rather confusing, especially if you’re just getting in to nail industry. There are 7 general nail shapes that have been around for a while and are standard amongst all nail technicians. There is round, oval, square, squoval, coffin (also known as ballerina), almond, and stiletto.

Round nails make the finger look more elongated, meaning they appear more narrow. Thus, if you have wide nail beds or chunky fingers, the round nail shape will give the illusion of making your fingers appear thinner than what they are.

Oval nails can have the same properties as round nails, especially depending on the length. This nail shape is most popular in regards to short nails, gel manicures, or acrylic overlays.

Square nails are perfect for someone who has narrow nail beds and slim fingers. It compliments your hand in a very aesthetically pleasing, uniform way. If your fingers are chunky or your nail bed are wide, square nails will often make them appear that way x 2, but not all the time. It really depends on how well they are shaped and how thick the application of nail products are. Whether, you decide to do short, medium, or long, square nail shape is beautiful.

Squoval nails look nice on all finger lengths and sizes. However, they look better on short nails as opposed to long acrylic nails.

Coffin, also known as Ballerina, is also great on all finger lengths and shapes. Even more so on someone who has chunky or short fingers, providing an elongated appearance of the finger due to the tapered sides. Whether the nail length is short, medium, or long, the shape complements it.

Almond nails have the best appearance on short/medium nail legnths. It can also provide elongation due to its tapered tips. If you like stiletto nails but don’t like how pointy and sharp they are for your daily, everyday use of your hands. Almond nail shape is a good substitute.

Stiletto nails are the best for elongation of the nail due to its extremely tapered sides and sharpness. It’s a little bit on the dramatic side but provides a super cute, edgy persona. Medium and long length nails look best with this shape.
