A paraffin bath is a soft wax that is white or colorless and made of hydrocarbons (a compound of hydrogen and carbon) that is slowly melted to a comfortable warm temperature.
First and foremost, salon grade paraffin baths should only be done by licensed professionals. However, over the counter paraffin baths can be purchased at your local Sally’s or Beauty Supply Store and can be done in the comfort of your own home.
Paraffin baths have both cosmetic and therapeutic benefits. Cosmetically it allows for a natural emollient from the warm wax, allowing your skin to feel as smooth as a baby’s bottom through the removal of dead skin. In addition, it opens up the pores within your hand, allowing for your hands to absorb a great deal of moisture. You can even choose from a large variety of scents to use, allowing for your hands to smell divine.
Paraffin baths can also act as heat therapy, allowing for increased blood flow, muscle relaxation, reduced muscle spasms, calm inflammation and decreased joint stiffness. In turn, the therapeutic benefits include temporarily relief of pain in the hands for someone who may suffers from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and/or other joint mobility issues.
However don’t use paraffin baths if you any rashes or open sore, diabetes, numbness in your hand, or poor blood circulation for it may cause adverse effects.
