What Are Acrylic Nails & Are They Safe

Growing up, I was never the girl that went to the salon and got her nails done. My first time within a nail salon, was when I was 20 and I was confused as to the type of service I was to ask for. I would go inside with an inspiration picture and hope that the technician would know what to do to bring it to life.

So what are acrylic nails? They are a combination of a powder polymer and liquid monomer that form a paste with bonding capabilities. It hardens with increased air exposure and has a very short window of mobility and for one to sculpt it. It provides strength, length, and thickness to a nail.

Are acrylic nails safe? Acrylic nails often get a bad rep in regards to damaging the natural nail. However, they aren’t any worse than press ons, gel polish, and other nail products on the market. It all comes down to how one removes the artificial nail product from their natural nail. Improper removal of any artificial nail products can have damaging side effects such as thinning of the nail plate, nail sensitivity, and pain during the removal process. It also causes multiple layers of the nail plate being ripped off, which also leads to nail thinning, not to mention it’s also visibly unpleasant. Thus, it’s important that they are removed properly to prevent such issues from occurring. And no, ripping them off, sliding an object underneath the acrylic nail and between your natural nail to make them lift, biting them off, and popping them off are not safe removal techniques.
